Former CHS Hockey Player Earns Military Recognition
2010 CHS Graduate and Ice Hockey Captain, Michael Diglio earns prestigious Certificate of Bravery.
Today in London, England, Aviation Survival Technician Second Class (AST2) Michael Diglio of the United States Coast Guard was awarded the Certificate of Bravery by the International Maritime Organization—the United Nations’ maritime agency representing 176 member states. This prestigious honor reflects great credit on Mike’s devotion to duty, the United States Coast Guard, and the United States of America.
The IMO’s official narrative reads:
“Aviation Survival Technician Second Class (AST2) Michael Diglio, Coast Guard rescue swimmer at Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater of the United States Coast Guard, nominated by the United States, for his brave and decisive actions during the rescue of two mariners stranded aboard the disabled sailing vessel Venture amidst the extreme conditions of Tropical Storm Debby.
After seeing a distress flare in the darkening sky, AST2 Diglio had to rely on the helicopter’s instruments rather than visual cues during the search. Once the vessel was located, he deployed into the sea under time pressure due to limited fuel reserves, battling rough currents and torrential rain to reach the survivors.
After securing the first survivor amid towering waves and 50-knot winds, he signaled for the hoist while keeping the mariner stable during the ascent. He repeated this rescue process for the second survivor. AST2 Diglio displayed selflessness and courageous leadership while executing a life-threatening rescue operation.”
We are proud to share Mike Diglio’s actions with you. Many of us understand firsthand the significance of this award—earned in the unforgiving fury of offshore seas. Congratulations, Mike, and thank you for your courage, your service, and your commitment to saving lives. We are grateful for you and for all Coast Guard rescue teams who answer the call in dangerous conditions all too often.
